For a crew with flexible dates, June and September are the best time to sail Croatia: enough warmth for a swimming-and-sailing week, with fewer very hot days than July or August. Split-Marjan's 1971 to 2000 averages put the sea at 21.1 °C in June and 21.7 °C in September. The same historical series records 5.0 days reaching 30 °C in June, against 16.5 in July and 1.1 in September. These are long-term observations, not the forecast for your holiday.
September also changes the boat budget. The site's 2027 weekly figures for Tonka, a three-cabin Elan Impression 40.1 from Marina Kaštela, are €3,875 in June, €4,440 in July, €2,738 in September and €1,950 in October. June is the stronger starting point for a long-daylight sailing week; September suits a crew balancing swimming and the boat bill. School holidays, sailing experience and the daily marine forecast can still settle the choice for you.
Sea temperature, heat and the charter month
The DHMZ Split-Marjan climate table contains two historical periods. The figures below use its 1971 to 2000 rows consistently. The yacht prices come separately from the site's 2027 monthly weekly-price data, read on 30 October 2026. They cover the yacht; skipper service and the running costs of the week are additional.
| Month | Mean sea temperature, 1971 to 2000 | Average days with a maximum of at least 30 °C | Tonka weekly yacht figure, 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| May | 17.3 °C | 0.1 | €3,010 |
| June | 21.1 °C | 5.0 | €3,875 |
| July | 23.2 °C | 16.5 | €4,440 |
| August | 23.6 °C | 15.7 | €3,762 |
| September | 21.7 °C | 1.1 | €2,738 |
| October | 19.3 °C | 0.0 | €1,950 |
Use the temperature column to discuss swimming expectations with the crew. Someone who wants long swims may prefer July or August; someone who dislikes hot afternoons may value June or September more. A monthly mean includes a range of days and conditions. It cannot tell a skipper whether tomorrow's crossing will be comfortable.
June and September for a first week
June gives a useful balance for a crew learning the boat's routine. Plan the first day around handover and provisioning, then leave the first sailing morning free of a demanding shore reservation. A short opening passage lets everyone learn the heads, galley, reefing arrangements and stern-to mooring jobs without making the first destination a deadline.
September's lower yacht figure can create room in the budget for a skipper, a different cabin layout or extra marina nights. In the Tonka example, September's €2,738 is €1,137 below June's €3,875 and €1,702 below July's €4,440. Those differences belong to this boat and the site's 2027 data. Apply the same comparison to the actual model you intend to sail.
The route planner offers a six-day, 94 NM loop from Marina Kaštela around Šolta, Vis, Hvar and Brač. Use its stops as a starting programme in either month, with the option to drop a destination when the weather changes. Choose the week for its seasonal pattern and adapt the island stops to the conditions.
July and August for swimming and school holidays
The historical sea averages are highest in July and August, at 23.2 °C and 23.6 °C. Those months also have many more hot days in the Split-Marjan series. For a school-holiday crew, cockpit shade, drinking water and a place to sleep comfortably deserve attention before adding another island to the itinerary.
Build shore visits around the crew's energy. A long town walk, a supermarket run and a berth manoeuvre are demanding jobs when everyone is hot. Keep meals simple on arrival day, put drinking water within reach and give children a clear place to sit during manoeuvres. A shaded cockpit table can matter more to the daily routine than an extra saloon berth.
Choose the boat using the fleet's layouts and equipment. Count the guest cabins after allowing for a hired skipper, then look at the usable shade and boarding arrangements. A maximum passenger number does not allocate a private sleeping space to each person.
May and October for crews who enjoy time ashore
May's historical sea average of 17.3 °C is a different proposition from August's 23.6 °C. October averages 19.3 °C, while the listed Tonka yacht figure falls to €1,950 a week. Both months can suit crews who enjoy harbours, walks and a flexible sailing programme as much as swimming.
Pack waterproofs, long trousers and warm layers for the cooler parts of the day. Allow time to arrive before the light fades and choose overnight stops with something useful to do ashore if the boat stays put. A shorter loop works better than a distant final destination when the crew has little appetite for a cold or wet passage.
ACI Marina Palmižana publishes an operating season from 1 April to 31 October. Its current page also notes reduced capacity during reconstruction and a 15 m maximum for a daily berth. Those details were read on 30 October 2026; a trip depending on that marina needs its operating arrangements for the travel year, particularly near the end of October.
Seasonal wind patterns and the daily decision
DHMZ's climate description identifies bura and jugo as more frequent and stronger during the cold part of the year. It also states that summer bura can disrupt maritime traffic. In settled summer conditions, north-westerly etesian winds are moderate in the Middle Adriatic; local sea breezes add another daily pattern around the islands.
That background explains why spring and autumn need room for change. It is not a reason to treat a summer departure as automatically easy. Read the DHMZ small-craft marine forecast, including gusts, warnings, sea state and the period covered. Our charter terms prohibit departure when wind is, or is expected to be, over 30 knots, and whenever the authorities have banned sailing.

Seasonal costs beyond the boat
September does not put every fee into low season. The cost calculator's ACI-based allowance for a roughly 12 m monohull is €145 a marina night in July and August and €130 in other months, based on the tariff covering 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. These are planning allowances across the selected marinas, so the particular berth charge still follows its length band and tariff.
Park seasons differ. The 2026 Kornati one-day ticket bought outside the park for an 11 to 17.99 m boat is €95 from June through September and €50 in the remaining months. A September crew therefore gets the lower marina allowance while still paying the park's summer rate. Keep the boat's 2027 price and each park's dated tariff in separate columns of the budget.
Use the charter cost calculator with the same crew and overnight plan when comparing months. For a monohull week from the Split area, Tonka's 2022 Elan Impression 40.1 details give the three-cabin layout behind the price example.
Frequently asked questions
Which month is best for a first sailing holiday in Croatia?
June and September are useful first choices for a crew with flexible dates. Split-Marjan's 1971 to 2000 sea averages are 21.1 °C and 21.7 °C, with fewer days reaching 30 °C than July or August. Pick between them using the boat price, your crew's swimming preferences and travel dates, then keep the daily route responsive to the marine forecast.
Is September cheaper than July for the same yacht?
The site's 2027 data lists Tonka at €2,738 a week in September and €4,440 in July, a €1,702 difference in the yacht figure. That comparison is for the same three-cabin Elan Impression 40.1. Add the skipper if hired, compulsory charges and the running costs before deciding how much each guest will spend during the week.
Is October too cold for sailing in Croatia?
October suits a crew prepared for cooler weather and changes of programme. Split-Marjan's historical mean sea temperature is 19.3 °C, but a monthly average cannot promise a comfortable swimming day. Take warm layers and waterproofs, choose manageable passages and plan places where the crew can enjoy a day ashore while waiting for suitable conditions.
Are national parks cheaper in September?
September remains high season in the park allowances used by our cost calculator. For example, a 2026 Kornati one-day ticket bought outside the park costs €95 for an 11 to 17.99 m boat from June to September, against €50 otherwise. A cheaper September yacht or marina night does not automatically mean a cheaper park ticket.
Can bora affect a summer charter?
DHMZ states that summer bura can cause problems for maritime traffic, even though bura and jugo are more frequent and stronger in the colder part of the year. Read the small-craft warning for the actual day and route. The charter's over-30-knot departure ban and any harbour-master restriction apply in summer as well as spring and autumn.
