How the sailing route planner works

Tap the map to drop waypoints, and the planner joins them with straight legs and adds up the distance in nautical miles and kilometres. Drag a waypoint to move it, or drag the small dot in the middle of a leg to put a new waypoint there. Undo takes back the last change.

Tick “Night stop” on the harbours where you will spend the night, and the route splits into days, each with its miles and its time under way at the speed you set. As you zoom in, the OpenSeaMap layer shows lights, buoys and harbour symbols.

Legs are straight lines, as on a paper chart, so they do not bend around land. Where a leg would cross an island or a headland, add a waypoint at sea to go round it.

Distances on a week from Split

Our ready-made week from Marina Kaštela, between Split and Trogir, has six sailing days and 94 NM in all: Kaštela to Maslinica on Šolta 15 NM, Maslinica to Vis 21 NM, Vis to Palmižana on the Pakleni islands 13 NM, Palmižana to Stari Grad 15 NM, Stari Grad to Milna on Brač 15 NM, and Milna back to Kaštela 14 NM.

At 5.5 knots the longest of those days, the crossing to Vis, takes just under four hours. That leaves the morning for a swim and the afternoon to find a berth.

Planning a day at sea

Most charter crews sail 10 to 25 NM a day: two to five hours at 5 to 6 knots. Longer days are possible, but on the Dalmatian coast the wind usually builds in the afternoon, and in July and August town quays and marinas fill up early, so plan to be in by mid-afternoon.

Speed through the water is not speed over the ground. A foul current, a beat to windward or a detour round a squall all add time, so treat the hours as a minimum and keep a reserve for the last day, when the boat must be back at its base by 17:00 on Friday.

Ready-made weeks from our bases

Each of our five bases has a ready-made week you can load and change: Kaštela and Seget for Šolta, Brač, Hvar and Vis; Marina Frapa in Rogoznica for Žirje, the Kornati and Dugi otok; Marina Kremik in Primošten for the Šibenik islands, Murter and Drvenik; and ACI Marina Dubrovnik for Šipan, Mljet, Korčula and Pelješac.

Charter weeks run Saturday to Saturday, so each route has six sailing days and ends at the home port on Friday evening. Pick one, change the stops to suit your crew, and send it to us with your dates: we will suggest boats from that base.

Nautical miles, knots and charts

A nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, the length agreed internationally in 1929. It is close to one minute of latitude, which is why distances on a chart are read off the latitude scale at its side. A knot is one nautical mile an hour, so 6 knots is 11.1 km/h.

The planner measures each leg along the great circle, the shortest line on the globe, which is within half a per cent of its length on the Earth's ellipsoid. It is a planning tool, not a navigation aid: on board, use official charts from the Croatian Hydrographic Institute (HHI) and check the forecast for sailors from the Croatian Meteorological and Hydrological Service (DHMZ) before each passage.

Tell us your dates and crew size, and we will suggest boats from the base that suits your route. The route and a link to it on the map are sent with your message.
